19th CENTURY
The 19th century saw the greatest development in samplers, although moral or religious texts, continued to be a frequent choice in the first half of the 19th century. There position becoming less prominent to more decorative elements. Large houses, figures and animals (particularly following the opening of London Zoo producing a range of prints to be copied).Imagery often personal to the stitcher make for a greater variety of sampler. . Events are commemorated, coronations, Balloon flights, and historic buildings. The Victorian period saw the improving or pious statements repapering central to the often fairly unsophisticated pieces we now recognise as a 'classic' Victorian sampler. Along side this was the extensive improvement of schools in particular the education of girls.
