A REMARKABLE SAMPLER OF STEAMER INTEREST. A VICTORIAN NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER BY ESTHER BODKIN, DATED '1872'.

worked with coloured silk on a linen ground, with alphabets, numerals, religious text and also with a description of a voyage 'We sailed from Liverpool in the steamer Wyoming on the 10 of April and landed at New York 23 and sailed from Quebec in the steamer Scandinavian on 22 June and landed at Liverpool 2 July 1872',.
Esther was born 8.4.1856 in Horsmonden in Kent to Hannah & Thomas. Thomas originally a farm labour became a farm Bailiff ( A farm bailiff is employed by the proprietor and his managerial duties can include collecting rent, taxes and supervising both farm operations and labourers.) At the age of 30 she married William Thomas Brooks of Tonbridge. They had seven children, she died aged aged 60 in 1916
