ADAM STYLE SPODE TERRACOTTA BODY BOTTLE COASTER c.1810.

£225

ADAM STYLE SPODE TERRACOTTA BODY BOTTLE COASTER c.1810. £225
I have always considered this one of the finesse pieces of SPODE dry body stoneware produced. (we first sold it some 30 years ago and have recently brought it back)).
Made at a time when pottery formed an integral part of an interior. The Adam style had moved away from the strict mathematical proportions previously found in Georgian rooms, and introduced curved walls and domes, decorated with elaborate plasterwork and striking mixed colour schemes using newly affordable paints in pea green, lemon, lilac, sky blue, and red-brown terracotta as in this wine coaster.
The "old Sheffield plate" rim , by Robert Gainsford ( his mark clearly placed central above the classical vignette) an integral part of the design protecting the pot from chipping against the harder wine decanter.
This also helps date it to the period, 1808-16.
impressed mark SPODE. 12 cm tall.
Two small chips to base.
