WONDERFUL SILKWORK "PRINTWORK" PICTURE c.1795 £125
Towards the end of the 18th century there was a vouge for monochrome embroidery -known as 'printwork' using tiny stitches to create charming rustic landscapes , occasionally strands of hair were woven into the design (giving this style the incorrect name of hairwork pictures) . Sources for printworks were contemporary engravings the scenes copied by tracing their outlines in pencil onto the silk ground, which were then filled in by stitching.
This delightful example worked in golden threads rather than black, retains its original brass frame measuring 19 x 13.5 cm.
