CHRIST CHURCH SCHOOL, TUNBRIDGE WELLS Kent, Circa 1842.
Tunbridge Wells is a town and district in Kent Royal Tunbridge Wells. The church of Christ Church which dates from 1835-1841 and was designed by Robert Palmer Brown of Royal Hill Greenwich, was formed as a parish in 1856.( It was demolished in 1996)
Joseph Lancaster, famous for being one of the early exponents of the 'monitorial system' of teaching, was in the vanguard of the work of the British and Foreign Schools Society. During these early years there was no compulsory education. In fact, the first Christ Church school was founded in 1842. At this time, state education was virtually non-existent, the only elementary schools were the 'Charity Schools'. Children were still to be found working in factories for up to eight hours a day. It was not unusual for many children to receive no education. Some found their way into Sunday schools where the teaching was not only religious but included some of the 3 R’s.
This unusual sampler was possibly done by a teacher or a group of children in the early years of the school as a teaching aid and "poster" demonstrating the standard of work achievable in the New School. |
