Towards the end of the 17th Century the French potters at Nevers, (central France) developed a blue glaze "Gros Bleu" or "bleu persan" in response to Persian potters and decorated it "blanc fixe" this proved popular and the English & Dutch followed with "bleu de Nevers" with the decoration either Oriental in style or with white splashes. The manor of decoration proved somewhat short lived confined to the period of c.1680-1700. But forms an important stepping stone in European Ceramic history.
A delightful small "ointment" pot with a ho-po bird amongst foliage.

The glaze can also be referd to as Blue Royal, or Royal blue.
