An important Quilt made by Lady Lucy Hicks Beach to commemorate the diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
Lady Lucy Catherine Fortescue, daughter of Hugh Fortescue, third Earl Fortescue, was the second wife of Sir Michael Edward Hicks Beach , 1st Earl of St Aldwyn, later Viscount, chancellor of the Exchequer. They had four children Eleanor Lucy [later Lady Eleanor Keane] (born 29 October 1875), Michael Hugh [later first Viscount Quenington] (1877), Susan Evelyn (1878) and Victoria Alexandrina (1879), for whom Queen Victoria stood sponsor at her baptism. After the deaths of her husband, son and daughter-in-law in 1916, the Countess was appointed co-guardian of her grandchildren Delia Mary and Michael John, second Earl St Aldwyn, and they spent part of each year with her at Coln Manor, and part at Sudeley Castle with their Brocklehurst grandparents.
Lady Lucy, The Countess St Aldwyn had been involved with Elizabeth Malleson in the creating of a Rural Nursing Association in the 1880s. This organisation was successful and incorporated in similar initiatives by Queen Victoria. She herself set up district nursing associations on the family estates.
The countess died in March 1940.
Lord St Aldwyn died in April 1916, aged 78, only a week after his son was killed in action in the First World War, and was succeeded in his titles by his grandson Michael, who also became a Conservative politician.

The eldest daughter Eleanor Lucy (later lady Eleanor Keane), The second daughter, Susan Hicks Beach (1878-1965), was the sitter representing Britannia on the reverse of the Edward VII silver florins (two shilling pieces) issued from 1902 to 1910 and designed by George William de Saulles. The youngest Victoria Alexandrina (b.1879) had the Queen as sponsor at her baptism. |
