A rare early 19th century darning sampler from the Wigton Quaker school. Worked in very fine red silk on a fine silk gauze with four darning crosses in white silk that are all but invisible to the eye. Signed and dated Ann Noble 1819.
The School Initially founded in 1815 by the Society of Friends in 1815 in hired premises at highmoor on the outskirts of Wigton in Cumbria. The initial intake was for 9 boys and 8 girls. In 1826 it moved to a new purpose built site at Brookfield.
Ann Noble was born 29.6.1804 to Ann & Thomas who attended the local Carlisle meeting house ( 12 miles). She married Daniel Oliver a grocer, on the 24.3 1829 and lived at 3 South Parade Elswick Northumberland. They had 5 children and retired to the Channel Islands. |
