IMPORTANT ROMANESQUE HOLY WATER STOUP. |
£SOLD |
An important Romanesque Holy water stoup fragment depicting The Kings Head.
Originally from the right hand side of an entrance door (from the ware on the right side) of a grand Cathedral or church, for personal anointment on entering but not just to Christ but the King.
William I,II & Steven were all depicted wearing a three pointed crown as with this carving and were clean shaven. So by placing his portrait on a holy water stoup, at the entrance one was placing his importance / homage to that of Christ, an important message for us British to our new Norman, French King.
English , 12/ 13th Century. |
