Hot Air Balloons were still a rare exciting sceptical during the 19th century, and pop up occasionally on samplers, probably having been seen by the young stitcher.
Mary Ann was in fact Christened Marianne her parents being Mary Ann and Charles Meacham a basket maker, off Odham Hampshire 14.Oct.1815. She married John Fulker aged 18 on 18,09.1834. A wheelwright. They had8 children. She died aged only 47 in 1863.
Mary Ann worked her sampler with a classic large central house with grass frontage and picket fence. Numerous trees and flowering plants fill the sampler as well as birds and insects including a large moth that balances the Hot Air Balloon in the bottom right corner.
Some damage bottom left corner, good strong colour and retains its original gilt frame measuring 39 x 51 cm.
