The story of a jug, when first viewed this pot my thoughts were the handle and lip very Northern Europe , the decoration and burnished surface sort of Anglo Saxon but the form Eastern Med. Interesting, the lady informed us that was given by her former husband some 40 years ago , she liked it more than her husband !. He had acquired it in Cyprus.
It can now be related to a large group of pottery discovered by Arachnologist's James Stewart and his wife in tombs near Vounous in 1937-8. The pottery dates from the Early Cypriot Age I and II eras ( 2500-2000 BC). They are distinct for their red polished surface and some have colouring effects or colour fluctuating from red to brown, to grey and black along their bodies. It had obviously been buried, one can surmise that the chipped spout, was possibly how it was found by a farmer or builder who after excavating it , used it for some time. the ware on the chip, and ground in dirt almost polished surface to the handle support this. It is still a usable water jug although somewhat heavy. So via the ex husband it has now found its self some 2200 miles away and a great statement piece of pottery / art or just a humble chipped jug ?. |
