Positive images of the disabled are almost unheard off in the 19th century, Usually they are depicted in a religious manor "Christ saving the sick" or as a soldier/ sailor begging in the street so we are particularly pleased to discover this image of a double Peg Leg Man in work sweeping the street. But even here he is depicted with is back turned, as though society has turned its back on him. |
