LONGSTONE LIGHTHOUSE, c.1840 |
£SOLD |
Rare depiction of Longstone Lighthouse c.1840.
I have always been amazed that although The Lighthouse has been around since ancient times, but more famously from the developments of Eddystone in 1759 and Robert Stevenson in 1797 I have never seen it represented as a model in pottery. I know it appears on Liverpool prints. It is only with the story of Grace Darling in 1838 that it reappears.
This would appear to be the Longstone Rock Lighthouse on Brownsman Island That her father was the lighthouse keeper, and from where she famously rescued the survivors of the Forfarshire shipwreck in 1838.
North East pottery Nigh light decorated with a sponge c.1840. |
