I do wish people people who keep family items recorded their history. Who was Ann Gater and her relationship to Ester 60 years later, probably Great grandmother and who's hair was kept in the match box, that was in the mug ?
Interestingly the caddy is creamware not porcelain an early date for this style.
Condition, chips & crack to caddy.
Sally Goodsir Esther Tomkinson b 1844 Bradwell Wood, married 1862 Frederick Gater, a potter, at St Michaels Wolstanton, 1871-1911 census living with him in Burslem (haven't downloaded every census entry but 1871 census at 43 Freehold Villas, Burslem with Frederick and their children Joseph (7), Elizabeth (5) and Henry (2)
Esther died in Bournemouth in 1930. I am struggling to find Anne, as you might know the first British census is 1851. I can find Frederick's direct male line fairly easily but none of the grandmothers are Anne. Frederick's father (Joseph, 1815-75) was a packer and his grandfather (Henshall, 1791-1854) a potter. One of Henshalls siblings might be likely but nothing coming up... |
