William Smith & Sons Stockton,1825-55 / 70.
Thought this was very interesting, having brought much William smith Pottery on the continent France Belgium & Holland over the years have always found the colors, shapes and body just slightly different than the English equivalent and believed it to be of Belgium manufacturer. Although there is much evidence of continental trade there was little information on where it was made (I may well be wrong and it is well known, but just not to me !). Although potting from 1825 in Stockton he became more interesting on 8.8.1848 with the court case of Wedgwood and others against Smith and others , in infringement of name and form, Smith had started using names like Wedgewood on his wares.
Back to our dish showing a view of the pottery of Cappellemans Aine (son) & W.Smith & Co in Jamappes Wallonia Belgium, set up by J.B.Cappllemans Fauvel,Willems & Picard in 1847 .
So my thoughts are, was he producing pots at another site earlier , or are the pots by him , transfer printed wares in the main including such patterns as the tea party produced much later than we think, in the mid 19th century. |
