A very rare Sussex pottery flash made in typical red body with incised letters in yellow clay. On one side we have the classic verse "No craft nor art can with us comepare (incorrectly spelt) ..
The other side For Henry funnel Piddinghoe Sussex April 23 1832.
Around the rim we have Made by John Siggery at his pottery Herstmonceux Sussex.
Henry was born in 1799 Chiddigly / Piddinghoe and later moved to Arlington also in Sussex. He married Lucy and would appear to have had either four or five children. He worked as a Labour and Excavator on the local rivers where he also worked as a navigator . He was retired by 1881 and died 26.Nov.1884 leaving an estate valued at £749 4s 11d. |
