A rare and interesting creamware tankard made for Martin Charlton and toasting the Coal Trade, Ferry Hill 1824.
Although Martin is recorded as a coal miner, it is unlikely he was underground and that this mug was made to commemorate the start of a new shaft in ferry Hill started in 1824.
Martin Charlton was born in 1805, in Ferryhill, Durham the child of Martin & Ellan. He lived in Tudhoe having married Elizabeth he had two sons and two daughters.
