15th Century MEDIEVAL GRAFFITI x 2 |

. They were, still in the old prison in Melton in the 1920’s and recorded there in a book on Windmills published c.1930. Where they had been attributed to Dutch Prisoners of war captured at the Battle of Sole Bay in 1672, because a date of 1681 was scratched on a wall by the windmills. It is most unlikely that any number of prisoners were kept for 9 years in a very small village jail. Recent research by Matthew Champion on Medieval Graffiti in particular Suffolk Churches has suggested a very much earlier date probably 15th Century . It is very rare to find Medieval Graffiti surviving, not on a church wall let alone the opportunity to own apiece |
