REWARD FOR YOUR DILIGENCE |
£SOLD |
A rare and unusual Staffordshire creamware child's mug by Enoch Wood & Sons (Burslem, 1818-46), transfer-printed with a red shield inscribed 'ACCEPT THIS SMALL REWARD FOR YOUR DILIGENCE', flanked on the left by a dancing boy playing a tambourine and on the right by a dancing girl playing a triangle both printed in black, the handle, base and rim highlighted in silver lustre. A very similar mug is in the Geoffrey Godden Collection illustrated by Noel Riley, Gifts for Good Children (1991), p. 208. Approximately 7.5cm high.
Condition wise there are four fine vertical cracks running from the rim down the front and sides of the mug, each parallel to one another (see images). These are approximately 5cm, 4cm, 5cm and 1cm in length respectively. There is also a small horizontal firing crack near the handle approximately 1cm in length (see image). The silver lustre is also slightly worn in places, particularly around the rim. |
