NORTHEAST POTTERY MUG c.1780 |
£125 |
A very rare and unusual 18th Century pearlware tankard decorated in over glaze enamels very much in a saltglaze style. This same style of decoration with a shaped panel is recorded in Creamware & Pearlware Re-examined by Tom Walfod page 110 on a teapot dated 1784 he attributes to the North East England. I also remember a coffee pot again dated in the mid 1780s sold at Sotheby's with the same style of decoration.
in this case the panel has chinoiserie decoration of Chinese style figures finely painted in black with over glaze enamel colours.
North East pottery circa 1785.
Height 6 inches 15.5 cm.
Condition. Unrestored The pot is in stable condition although there are patches of flaking to the surface, both on the out side as well as on the inside they appear deeper than just glaze. No cracks or restoration.
