From about AD 50 through to the middle ages Upchurch appears to be an important pottery site generally overlooked. It was the early 'Staffordshire' of the period producing a wide range of pots from fine Samian copies to basic cooking ware. So this pot with its distinctive veining caused decayed organic matter (roots etc). in the clay was an intentional feature of this pot.
A good classic Upchurch pot of the Slayhill / Milfordhope type. Globular shaped vessel with inverted rim and shallow cordon below the neck. AD.90-120. Understood to have been found in Chatham New Road in the early 1970s
