PEWTER PLATE WRIGGLE WORK London 1720

£1250

PEWTER PLATE WRIGGLE WORK London 1720 £1250
A most interesting Pewter plate, it has been suggested that the crowned Lion with human face is a representation of William III. The lion with human face is found on both English & Dutch delft as well as Chinese porcelain made for the Dutch market. English plates with this pattern have been attributed to London, circa 1720 as is this pewter plate with its London touch mark.
A delft plate with lion has been dug up at Williamsburg (27AB.0276).
see. J.A.Austin British Delft at Williamsburg pl.194, 195.
Litt. T.Jellinek, Animal Decoration in English Delftware. Antique Collector XLI 1970, p.87.fig.12.
A remarkable plate showing the cross over of patterns between potters and metal workers.
Touch mark LONDON with owners initials MW.
Diameter 8 1/2 inches, 22 cm.
