WHIELDON-TYPE MODEL of a COW , c.1780. |
£SOLD |
A Staffordshire or possibly Devon creamware model of a Bull, decorated in the Whieldon Style. Late 18th Century.
Splashed in brown & green, and modelled standing with his head turned to the right, on a rectangular base with canted corners, moulded in low relief with leaves.
There is a thought that these may be the work of the Bovey Tracy pottery Devon (c.1770-1800). Cow groups are well recorded with milkmaids. But what appears to be indictative of the pottery is the use of red clay in the eyes of the animals as well as the deep cream body of the clay. (see Adams & Thomas pg.61 ,62.
Restoration to horns ears and base.
An almost identical model sold Christies, Sale No.5686. Lot199.(£4350)
