MARY JANE COOKE, Tunbridge Wells National School 1850

£......

MARY JANE COOKE, Tunbridge Wells National School 1850 £......
A very rare needlework sampler by Mary Jane Cooke from "The National School" Tunbridge Wells. Mary completed her standard "alphabet" sampler before an unusual mathematical problem of simple proportions. Why this would be worked out with needle & thread rather than pencil we do not know, a few others are known. Multiplication tables are more commonly found, the slower working of the needle helping to put their tables to memory.
National schools were founded in 19th century England and Wales by the National Society for Promoting Religious Education. These schools provided elementary education, in accordance with the teaching of the Church of England, to the children of the poor.
It would appear Mary Jane was born January 1838 the daughter of Mary (nee Hewitt) & Francis Larah Cooke a Master Baker living at 3 Berkeley Place.
